What Are Short-Term Rehab Services?

If you're recovering from an illness, surgery, or accident, your healthcare provider may recommend short-term rehab services to help you regain independence and facilitate the transition back home.

Let’s review what short-term rehab services entail and what you may expect from your stay at a short-term rehab facility.

What Are Short-Term Rehab Services?

Short-term rehab services provide intensive therapy and medical supervision in a specialized facility to help patients recover from an illness or surgery after discharge from a hospital and before returning home.

A short-term rehab facility offers around-the-clock medical monitoring and support. Treatments and therapies are supported by a multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists.

The Purpose of Short-Term Rehab Services

Short-term rehab services help patients recover and regain as much of their normal functions as possible, providing personalized and comprehensive treatment plans to enable them to:

  • Accelerate recovery after surgery or injury through pain management, mobility restoration, and muscle strengthening.
  • Regain mobility, balance, strength, and functionality to resume daily activities safely and independently.
  • Manage chronic conditions (e.g., stroke, cardiac disease) to control symptoms and improve quality of life.
  • Prevent hospital readmissions and reduce the risks of complications during recovery by providing medical oversight.
  • Facilitate cognitive and speech recovery from strokes or neurological conditions.
  • Prepare for a safe return home by offering training on managing daily activities like walking, dressing, and self-care.
  • Cope with the mental challenges they encounter during recovery with psychological and emotional support.

Types of Short-Term Rehab Services

A short-term rehab facility like Rehab Select offers various types of therapy and care, including physical, occupational, and speech-language therapies and round-the-clock medical and personal care.

You may access specialized knowledge and expertise in cardiac, pulmonary, orthopedic, and neurological rehabilitation. You may also receive wound care management, pain management services, and mental health counseling to support a holistic recovery.

What to Expect from a Short-Term Rehab Facility

Short-term rehab services encompass a broad range of activities to provide a supportive and structured environment for recovery. You’ll receive a comprehensive evaluation and personalized care plan tailored to your condition and recovery goals during admission.

A multidisciplinary care team, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, social workers, care coordinators, dietitians, and mental health professionals, is available to support your treatment plan.

You'll receive intensive rehabilitative therapy sessions and round-the-clock medical monitoring and medication management. Patients typically spend up to three hours with therapists daily, six or seven days a week at Rehab Select.

Besides professional and medical care, a reputable short-term rehab facility provides a comfortable living environment, a supportive atmosphere, and training and education (e.g., safe mobility techniques, use of assistive devices, home safety modifications) to help facilitate your recovery at home.

Visitors are welcome, and family members are encouraged to participate in the recovery process to help you stay upbeat and motivated. Your family may also learn caregiving techniques to ease your transition back home.

Moreover, your care team will work closely with you and your family on discharge planning and transition support. Therapists may provide home care recommendations, follow-up therapy schedules, and instructions on using assistive equipment.

The length of your stay at a short-term rehab facility may vary, depending on your needs, goals, health, functional ability, and more. The average stay at Rehab Select’s short-term rehabilitation programs is 14 to 16 days. Your care team will estimate the length of your stay after a thorough evaluation during admission.

Does Medicare Cover Short-Term Rehab Services?

Medicare Part A covers short-term rehab services in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for up to 100 days. To be eligible, you must have a qualifying inpatient hospital stay of at least three consecutive days within the last 30 days. Your doctor must certify your need for daily skilled care, and the short-term rehab facility must be Medicare-certified.

At the time of writing, Medicare covers the first 20 days of short-term rehab services in full, including all equipment, supplies, medications, meals, therapies, and nursing care. From day 21 to 100, you may have a co-pay. Our admission staff can help explore payment options, including Medicare and other public or private insurance you carry.
